Each month we will be shining a light on different dog breeds in our monthly series, Dog Breed of the Month. Next, we look at the bold and fearless little Yorkshire Terriers.

“Yorkshire terriers – also known as Yorkies – are ‘toy’ dogs who on average only weigh about 3.2kg, and can live for over 12 years,” Claire Roberts, PDSA vet, tells Country Living. “Despite their small size, they often have big personalities so owners might need a bit of patience during training!”

From personality to owner requirements, take a look at everything you need to know about Yorkshire Terriers…

Do Yorkshire Terriers bark a lot?

Yes, Yorkies are known for being vocal dogs and enjoy ensuring owners can hear their voice. Whether it’s someone at the door or an unfamiliar noise, they have a lot to say and will bark at a variety of noises. Proper training will help to control any bad barking habits, especially with young puppies.

Are Yorkshire Terriers good family dogs?

Originally bred to catch rats in mills, Yorkshire Terriers are dogs with a hunting instinct, drive and determination. Famous for being determined little creatures, they make great pets for those both living alone and families with older children. As well as this, they are famous for making great bonds with their owners and are also considered great apartment dogs due to their small size.

Who should own a Yorkshire Terrier?

“Yorkies are best for households with older children as they have very fragile bones so could be accidentally injured by younger children,” Claire tells us.

“As with any pet, we recommend learning everything you can about the breed to make sure you can provide for all their welfare needs, to keep them happy and healthy. Like all dogs, Yorkshire Terriers need companionship and exercise, so it’s important to make sure your lifestyle allows for this. They also still need daily walks and regular grooming.”
